You know when you are practicing CPR on those plastic dummies, and you think that your never actually gonna do this on a real person. Well, that's what I thought anyways, until this last week when one of my patients had a cardiac arrest in the middle of the night! Thankfully I had one of my colleges there with me, when it happened quite unexpectedly. I called for an ambulance and we started CPR while waiting for them to show up, which was less than 10 minutes. An hour later I had to call the family and tell them he didn't make it. Its one of those nights you hope you don't have to experience again, but that teaches you a lot about how you handle hard situations. And I'm thankful it was a patient who had lived a very long and full life. Hoping he's with the Lord now.
