So today we went out for supper, and we went to a very culturally appropriate place. Sometimes its easy to go to restaurants that specializes in serving foreigners, but you can miss out on lots of fun that way (including stomach bugs..haha;) Anyways, we went to this "restaurant" that opens at night and literally consists of a sidewalk, a small grill, some plastic tubs and a few tables for the food. They roll out some mats on the ground, and after picking out the food you'd like, you just sit down while they heat it on a tiny, little grill. I had a fish, coconut rice wrapped in a palm leaf and some tempe (soy bean cake). It was really yummy, and cost about a little over a dollar (6 kr), including a drink. I think we almost paid more for the "entertainment", at least three or four guys with guitars came by to play during our meal. As soon as you give them some money though, they are off! So depending on the "quality" of the music, you can pay right away or wait ;) They definitely don't feel like they have to play you the whole song.
My room-mate Sarah :) Notice the sandals in the background. You always take your shoes of before stepping onto a mat, even if its right on the sidewalk.
There's the grillmeister hard at work!
The lady dishing up
Our coconut rice and some salad, and the little blue boles of water were for washing off your fingers after eating fish with your hands
People sit cross-legged a lot, and its hard for a stiff norwegian to get used to curling up her feet all the time! But I'm making progress! Now my main problem is trying not to fall over when I finally get on my feet again ;)
