Engagement party

Today a bunch of us got to go to the engagement party of the niece of one of our language helpers. She is marrying a westerner, and since not too many of his family members could come over here for the wedding (which is on Sunday, short engagement ha?), we were "hired" to be part of his family for the engagement ceremony. This in essence meant that we were to help bring presents to the bride. The groom and his family bought a bunch of presents to present to the bride at the engagement party. It was all really nicely arranged in pretty, decorated baskets. There were some bananas and an egg (that I think were supposed to symbolize them having plenty of food), there was money (symbol of financial prosperity perhaps?), batik clothing twisted into the shape of peacocks (looked so cool!), shoes, a hand bag, lots of makeup and other toiletries, and other clothing and food.

The bird cage had money twisted into the shape of birds

After the ceremonial stuff and lots of picture taking (they had professional photographers), we had lots of food. I tried a fruit called snake skin fruit, which is exactly what it looks like. In fact when I was at the marked on time I commented on this fruit looking like snake skin, before I knew that was actually the name of it! Turns out it tastes really yummy, not at all like snake skin (I think..).
