Today (after a few hours of orientation about language and culture learning, and a lovely rice and vegetable lunch!) me and some friends went on our first local transportation and shopping trip without anyone with us who speaks the language.! We had some communication problems about where we wanted to get off the bus, and some laughing from the money collecting guy, but all in all it went well :) Since it is only two days till a big holiday here called Idul Fitri, the shops are crazy busy, and we waited for at least 30 min to pay for our things. Everyone is shopping because the stores will be closed for a while for the holidays. We will be visiting a lot of people at their houses during the holidays, as well as giving out cookies and money for presents to those we visit, and for our house helper. Hopefully this will be a great opportunity to learn more about the culture here.
This evening we had lots of people over for a bible study and social time in the local language (but we did quite a bit in English since several of us don't understand a word of the local language yet,) We had people from Germany, Norway, Canada, US, Brazil, as well as this country! Now its late, and I need to get some sleep, so there will be no Norwegian blogging today, I'll give it a go again tomorrow!
On the "bus". Its fairly bumpy as you can tell by the picture quality ;)
