Sacrifices and an unexpected road-trip

Today was the holiday Idul Adha, and a bunch of cows and goats were sacrificed at the various mosques. We went to look and it was pretty grim, lets just say I'm not showing you my best close-ups! They basically sawed through the cows necks with a big knife and the blood was spurting everywhere. Kids were running around the place watching the whole thing, they didn't seem to mind at all. If blood freaks you out, don't scroll down any further!

After the sacrificing me and some friends went with a lady from my church and her son and his family on a road trip. I originally though we were just heading to a village about 30 min from town, but we ended going much further, and visited a volcano center. It was like a place to learn about volcanoes and you had an awesome view right at Mt. Merapi.

Of course Sponge Bob was there as well ;)

On the way home we visited a family who had worked for the lady we traveled with. My two kids for the day got to feed and pet a cow (one of the lucky ones who survived the day). The cows lived inside their house, with just a half wall separating them from the kitchen.

We saw some beautiful scenery on the way home, this was in the middle of now where, I'm pretty sure we were lost for a good while, as a regular 30 min ride took about 1,5 hours. Poor Ariel didn't quite get along with the road though, and had to throw up a couple of times. All in all I think we learned quite a bit about local culture today :)
